Serial to fiber converters: RS232 and RS485, finally at distance

Six industrial serial-over-fiber models for the control world's oldest interfaces — the ones running PLCs, meters, barriers and telemetry that copper limits to a bus-length.

λ.01

Serial did not die; it moved into cabinets

RS232 and RS485 were supposed to be replaced decades ago. Instead they became the permanent plumbing of the physical world: PLCs speak them, meters report on them, barriers, weighbridges, HVAC controllers and legacy telemetry all terminate in a serial port. Their copper limits are severe — RS232 is a room-scale interface, RS485 a site-scale one with strict bus discipline — and both suffer in electrically violent environments. This family of six industrial models converts serial links to fiber, where distance stops mattering and ground loops and surge paths disappear.

The family's documented reference model shows the expected consolidation: a CAN Bus Serial RS232/RS485 to Fiber Optic Converter — the three field buses of a control cabinet over one fiber path. Around it, the family covers the RS485-over-fiber and RS232-to-fiber duties that make up most serial extension work: point-to-point links first, with bus topology questions (multi-drop RS485 networks) handled as the design question they are, in the specifying section.

How to specify

Interface, baud and topology — in that order

Serial specification is exact: which interface (RS232, RS485 2-wire or 4-wire, CAN), which baud rate and parity, and whether the link is point-to-point or a multi-drop bus. Fiber conversion is natively point-to-point; an RS485 bus design must state its drop count so the architecture (bus over fiber vs star from a hub point) is designed, not discovered.

Isolation is often the real requirement

Many serial-over-fiber jobs are not about distance at all: they are about breaking a ground loop or a surge path between buildings or across a plant. If isolation is the driver, say so — it confirms fiber over the cheaper copper repeaters immediately.

Connector and wiring conventions

Serial's eternal trap is pinout variance. State the connector type and device at each end in the inquiry; the confirmation covers the interface variant so the field install is a plug, not a soldering session.

Questions buyers ask

Can fiber carry a multi-drop RS485 bus?

The bus must be re-architected: fiber segments are point-to-point, so a multi-drop design becomes a chain or star of point-to-point hops. Describe the bus (drops, distances, baud) and the layout will be designed and quoted as a system.

What baud rates are supported?

Rate support is per model. Serial jobs live at everything from 1200 baud telemetry to fast control links — state your rate and format (bits/parity/stop) and it is confirmed against the model in writing.

Does conversion change my protocol?

No — the converter is transparent to the bytes. Modbus, proprietary polls and CAN frames pass as they are; the medium changes, the conversation does not.

Confirm the exact configuration before payment
