HDMI over fiber, from boardroom runs to 4K plants

Fifteen models across the HDMI families — 1080p and 4K, with KVM, loop-out and micro dongle formats — for the distances HDMI copper was never meant to cover.

Fifteen models, one problem: HDMI distance

HDMI is the world's default video connector and its least distance-tolerant: a passive copper lead is a few metres of certainty, after which signal integrity becomes negotiation. Fiber ends the negotiation. This group of families — eight HDMI over fiber converters, three dedicated 1080p models and four 4K models — converts HDMI to light at the source and back at the display, so the run between them can be as long as the fiber plant allows rather than as long as an HDMI lead survives.

The formats span the real shapes of HDMI work. Full-size converter pairs serve equipment racks and signage heads. Models with loop-out feed a local monitor at the source while the fiber copy travels. KVM variants carry USB back along the same link for control positions. And the micro line shrinks the transmitter to a dongle that plugs directly onto a laptop or camera — the 4K HDMI page covers those in detail. If your run can be served by structured copper instead, the HDMI extender family (Cat5e/6) is the honest alternative and has its own page.

How to specify

Resolution and HDCP are specification items, not assumptions

State the source resolution, refresh rate and whether the content path involves HDCP. The 1080p and 4K families are separate lists; quoting starts from the signal you actually run, and the exact model's format support is confirmed in writing before payment.

Decide if the source end needs a local picture

Loop-out models exist because control positions often need to see the feed where it originates. If a local monitor is in the design, filter for loop-out first — retrofitting a splitter at the source is the clumsier path.

Fiber type decides the module, again

As everywhere in this catalogue, reach is set by the fitted optical module against your fiber. Single-mode and multimode plants take different modules; name your fiber in the inquiry.

Questions buyers ask

HDMI over fiber or HDMI over Cat6 — which should I buy?

Copper extenders are excellent inside their distance class (the catalogue's Cat6 models reach 120 m). Fiber wins when the run is longer, crosses electrically noisy space, or must be immune to ground potential differences between buildings. The blog comparison walks the decision in full.

Do these extenders carry audio?

HDMI embeds audio in the same stream, and the conversion is transparent to it. Several video-family models also add separate analog audio channels — see the model table notes.

Can I extend USB for a touch screen at the display?

That is the KVM pattern: use a KVM model or the USB over fiber family so the return USB channel rides the same link.

Confirm the exact configuration before payment

Send the model name, the distance, the fiber type and the quantity. We will confirm the matching transmitter/receiver pairing, the optical module and the full specification of the exact model in writing before you pay.
