OEO converters: where fiber changes its mind

Ten OEO models that receive light and re-launch it — single-mode to multimode, one wavelength to another, or the same signal repeated further — the optical-electrical-optical toolkit.

λ.01

Conversion inside the optical layer itself

Most converters on this site translate between copper and light. An OEO converter works one layer deeper: optical in, electrical in the middle, optical out — and in that electrical middle, the signal can change its character. Single-mode becomes multimode or the reverse. One wavelength becomes another, so a grey optic can join a DWDM plan or a legacy 1310 nm link can meet a 1550 nm plant. A fading signal is re-timed and re-launched at full power, which makes the OEO the optical layer's repeater. Ten documented models across two families — the OEO Converter line and the Commercial AI Smart Managed OEO line — cover this work in the catalogue.

The documented reference model names the pattern plainly: a 1000M Multi Single Mode Converter — the mode-conversion case, bridging the multimode world inside a building with the single-mode world between buildings, which is the single most common OEO job in enterprise networks. The managed commercial line adds the visibility layer for OEO points that sit on planned wavelength infrastructure.

How to specify

Name both sides of the conversion

An OEO specification is two optical descriptions: what arrives (fiber type, wavelength, rate, connector) and what must leave. 'Convert my fiber' is not a specification; 'multimode 850 nm gigabit in, single-mode 1310 nm out' is. The inquiry template is simply those two sentences.

Wavelength conversion is a plan, not an adapter

Where wavelength conversion joins a DWDM or BiDi plan, the target wavelength must come from the plan's channel map. State the target channel/wavelength in the inquiry — the model confirmation is meaningless without it.

Repeating is budget arithmetic

Used as a repeater, the OEO resets the optical budget: the span before it and the span after it are budgeted separately. Give both span lengths and fiber types; a repeater specified on only one span is half-specified.

Questions buyers ask

OEO vs a pair of media converters back to back?

Functionally related, practically different: the OEO is one device engineered for the optical-to-optical job (including wavelength change), one power feed, one management point. Back-to-back copper converters insert two unnecessary electrical conversions and cannot change wavelength.

Does OEO conversion add latency?

The signal passes through electronics, so the conversion is not zero-time — but it operates at the physical layer without packet processing. Any hard latency budget (storage replication) should be stated and confirmed against the model.

Can an OEO convert data rates too?

Rate conversion is model-specific, not an OEO birthright. State both rates in the inquiry; if the job is rate change rather than mode/wavelength, the answer may be a different device entirely — and will be quoted as such.

Confirm the exact configuration before payment

Send the model name, the distance, the fiber type and the quantity. We will confirm the matching transmitter/receiver pairing, the optical module and the full specification of the exact model in writing before you pay.
