PDH multiplexers: many legacy circuits, one fiber pair

Seven PDH multiplexer models that aggregate E1 channels and Fast/Gigabit Ethernet onto a fiber — with 1+1 optical protection on the documented workhorse models.

λ.01

Aggregation is a different job from conversion

A converter serves one circuit. A multiplexer serves the bundle: the site that has four E1s for telephony and control plus Ethernet services, all needing to cross the same inter-site fiber, ideally with a protection path. That is PDH's enduring niche — deterministic TDM aggregation beneath the IP layer — and this family of seven models is the catalogue's aggregation shelf, its very name (SDH PDH Multiplexer Protocol Converter) keeping the legacy it serves in plain view.

The documented models repay reading. The 4E1 + 4FE 1+1 Fiber PDH Multiplexer provides 1–4 channel E1 interfaces, a master optical interface and a backup optical interface (the 1+1 protection), 1–4 channels of 10/100M Ethernet and expansion interfaces. Its 4GE sibling raises the Ethernet side to Gigabit. At the top, the 16E1 + 4FE class (documented in the protocol family as the 16E1-4FE converter/multiplexer pattern) serves exchange-scale aggregation. Below them, the 4E1+1 base model covers the simple case with the family's documented reliability pitch: flexible configuration, alarm functions, low power, high integration, small size.

How to specify

Count E1s and Ethernet services separately

The model ladder is a two-axis grid: E1 count (4, 8, 16) × Ethernet provision (FE or GE, port count). A services inventory — circuits, their types, the Ethernet services and their rates — is the entire specification. Bring that table to the inquiry.

Protection is a decision, not a default

The 1+1 models carry master + backup optical interfaces. Protection doubles the fiber requirement on the route and is worth it exactly when the circuits are. State whether the route has two diverse fiber paths; a protection model on a single path is money unspent elsewhere.

Management and alarms

The family documents alarm functions as a class feature. Sites with a NOC should state their management expectations in the inquiry so the model's provisions are confirmed against them.

Questions buyers ask

PDH or SDH — which shelf is this?

This family is the PDH shelf (with the catalogue naming it SDH PDH). It aggregates E1-rate services. SDH-rate transport (STM-1 and above) is a different equipment class — if your circuits are already SDH, say so in the inquiry and expectations will be set correctly.

Can the multiplexer also carry my serial services?

Serial services join via the serial converter family onto their own channels, or are counted as services in the design. The design inquiry aggregates the whole legacy inventory — that is precisely the exercise.

What does 1+1 protection switch on?

The documented architecture is a master and a backup optical interface; protection switching behaviour (triggers, switch time) is model documentation confirmed in the quotation for the chosen unit.

Confirm the exact configuration before payment

Send the model name, the distance, the fiber type and the quantity. We will confirm the matching transmitter/receiver pairing, the optical module and the full specification of the exact model in writing before you pay.
